The 4th annual Great Abaco Family Fitness Weekend brought fast competition in all of the events, with records being smashed in several of them. The event supported two main beneficiaries, the Rotary Club of Abaco and Friends of the Environment, and was sponsored by Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty, Abaco Insurance, Vita Coco, and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. The Treasure Cay Beach, Marina and Golf Resort hosted the event.

The races took place from Friday March 20th through Sunday, March 22nd, with over 80 people participating. Athletes came from across the US and Canada and throughout the Bahamas, including Abaco, Freeport and Nassau.

The first event was the 1-mile Open Water Swim, where Nassuvian Jacob Roach edged out his father, Dorian, to take the men’s title. Jacob, 12, was followed out of the water by mere seconds by Abaco Swim Club competitor Taylor Albury, 11, who won the women’s division. Liam Roberts, another Abaco local, completed the swim at the young age of 7, while Dr. Elwood Bracey completed the swim for the third time, at the young age of 78.

The Sprint and Olympic Triathlons took place on Saturday. Competitors in the Sprint Triathlon completed a 500m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run and the Olympic competitors gruelled through a 1500m swim, 40km bike, and 10km run.

Tad Fabian, from Marco Island, Florida, dominated the Sprint Triathlon and set the new course record in 1:06:41. He then went on to complete the 10km run portion of the Olympic Relay for team “Banana Nuts”. Romeo Seymour of Freeport placed second and Scott Harris of Port Hardy finished third. Vicki Stafford defender her title for the 4th year in a row and set the course record, beating her previous best by 3 seconds in 1:22:20. Christina Pyfrom, 15 years old from Marsh Harbour, placed second followed by Amelia Putnam from Man-O-War.

The Olympic triathlons consisted of only women in the individual category, and two mixed relays. Alexandra Miller finished first in a time of 2:45:20 followed by Sylvia Bateman and Dana Cave. Team “Conch Salad” won the relay division in 2:30:46, with swimmer Katie Roach, biker Ken Chaplin (both from Nassau) and Joshua Kelley.

The 5km and 10km road races took place on Sunday morning to round out the weekend’s events. In the 5km female division, Olympic Triathlon champion Alexandra Miller edged out her friend Christina Pazmino by a fraction of a second, with Nakia Wilhoyte finishing third. The male category saw returning champion and course record holder Justin Furcich, 18, from Monticello break his own record with a time of 18:33 – Justin was just 15 when he competed in the inaugural event. Brucely Missick from Treasure Cay followed in second with Romeo Seymour in third. The 10km female division was won by Robyn Matheson in 54:09, followed by Jackie Albrecht and Lynn Pritchard. Joshua Kelly, 13, won the 10km mens division in 54:53 followed by David Woodson and David Deweise.

The organizers would like to thank all of the participants, volunteers, and sponsors of the event along with Abaco Crash Fire & Rescue and the Royal Bahamas Police force for all of their support. The 5th annual Great Abaco Family Fitness Weekend is tentatively scheduled for March 18th – 20th, 2016.
